After the busy weekend I wasn’t sure about going out but it was Labor Day and I felt I should take advantage of the day off work. England has what are called “market towns” with long standing markets held on specific days of the week. When I say long standing I mean Selby received its market charter in 1324. For over SEVEN HUNDRED years the market has been in existence! Selby is a small town but easily accessible by train (not too far nor too expensive) and my lovely apartment is quite convenient to both Bradford train stations.

There is a beautiful Abbey in Selby, built in 1059. Selby Abbey is referred to as one of England’s great monastic churches. It is restored and is an active church today. To say it was breathtaking inside is a literal description. I did literally catch my breath. I took a stroll around the small market, had lunch and found a delicious slice of lemon cake to take back. I stopped by the rescue for a cup of tea (say that with a Yorkshire accent please) with some of the volunteers, which was a perfect ending to a great day!
